Why have a Performing Arts Center?

Your Boulevardier is dismayed to learn that the Castro Valley High School band will be playing its winter concert in the cafeteria at Canyon Middle School, and not in the new Performing Arts Center.

The Castro Valley Community Band, of which Your Boulevardier is a member, is also being forced to play its winter concert in the a cafeteria -- while the Performing Arts Center sits dark and idle.

Politics, not scheduling issues, underlie these decisions.

For the record, the High School Band's concert is on December 12 at 7:00 p.m. at Canyon, and the Community Band's concert is on December 20 at 8:00 p.m. at Creekside. Your Boulevardier hopes you will support your local musicians, and let your school board members know that it makes little sense to build a beautiful Performing Arts Center if it is not available for local performing arts groups.

...and the band played on.

Looks to me as if the CVCB is losing out Performing Arts Center time to the kids themselves. At least the kids get stage time.

Glancing at the CVUSD schedule, it's almost a flip- flop of which band is playing at which venue.

Dec. 12 - CVCB will be at Canyon
Dec. 13 - Canyon will be at CV Center for the Arts

Dec. 19 - Creekside will be at CV Center for the Arts
Dec. 20 - CVCB will be at Creekside

Granted, it takes a lot of manpower to set up and breakdown risers for an orchestra (40-piece or otherwise) but it's not like the district is putting on a performance of Fiddler on the Roof one night and Phantom of the Opera the next one.

Hmmm. Too bade about the politics. That is showbiz.

Or is it the other way around?

BTW... Thanks for the nod a few blogs ago. Still planning on walking up the hills any time soon?

I played drums in High School a few Blue Moons ago. ...a CV hill dweller

I'd like to know what calendar you're looking at. I don't know of a CVCB performance at Canyon. Can you provide a link?
