Castro Valley Post Office Hangs Up On Payphone

Perhaps it has been this way for a while, but Your Boulevardier just noticed today that the payphone has been removed from the Castro Valley Post Office. The spot is just a blank wall now, with poorly patched holes. One hopes that another stamp machine or some other useful thing will be put in its place. Or maybe something beautiful could be installed there, such as the painting of the Postal Jeep that used to hang by the teller windows. (One wonders what ever happened to it.)

I've noticed that pay phones and mail boxes are far and few between.

Shannon makes a really good point -- both pay phones and mailboxes are in short, short supply in today's world. Replaced by cellphones and email respectively, I guess.

Actually, AT&T said it is getting out of the pay phone business altogether last month. Call it a sign of the times.

Anyone here remember when calling Castro Valley meant asking for REdwood 3-0000 or TUxedo 1-0000?

As for post office boxes, they're more common around transit centers like BART than on average street corners. Mine growing up was 10 houses away. It was a thrill to do so.

There used to be mailboxes on both ends of my block. Now I have to drive to the post office to mail a letter, and that adds to the congestion of an already crowded parking lot.

I noticed the payphone at the Castro Valley library was recently removed as well.
