Traffic Gets One's Goat

Your Boulevardier was driving home from Oakland last evening around 9:45 p.m., but when he reached the mouth of Castro Valley -- just past the 164th Avenue offramp, and before 238 splits into downtown Hayward and west to San Lorenzo -- traffic came to a halt. Not just a slowdown, mind you; it was a shut-off-the-car-get-out-and-chat-with-other-motorists dead stop. After about 15 minutes it cleared, just as quickly as it had occurred. (We were allowed to continue east on 580, but vehicles were prevented from going on 238 in either direction.)

A traffic report on the radio a few minutes later announced the culprit: a herd of goats had gotten loose on the freeway! However, Your Boulevardier has not been able to find any other confirming media reports of this event. If readers hear anything, please post details in the comments.

I'm working the graveyard shift right now and usually traffic is light at 9 pm. I take 580 to 238 and last night there was quite a bit of traffic, but it was moving. Sounds like the goats were later in the evening. I would have liked to see that.

I was traveling on the freeway and in all that traffic. It was the funniest thing I'd seen in a while. About 4 or 5 goats were running in and out of traffic followed by a single officer with a flashlight. I tried to find information about where the goats came from or if things got under control couldn't find anything either. But it was true, I was there. I saw the goats. I even tried to take a picture but it was too dark.

Goats were seen grazing on the hill off Foothill (behind Casper's) last week.

Perhaps they were trying to head back to the Knowland Zoo?
