AN Interesting Typographic Question

Your Boulevardier noticed these stenciled words in the parking lot of Castro Valley's Safeway store. (Everyone's favorite parking lot.) Can you notice something interesting about them? (You may want to click the photos for a better view.)

Interesting that they appear to have used two different sets of stencils for these two sets of words. The thicker gaps in the "A" and "N" of "FIRE LANE" hurt the legibility of those letters. (Nice capital AN in your headline -- it did not go unnoticed!) Not only that, but it appears in your photos that the kerning is much greater between each letter in "FIRE LANE"!

The only thing that I noticed is that the stencils aren't all the same.

You both got it: the two sets of words use entirely different stencils, as can be seen particularly in the letters A and N.

Could be that the first set of stencils was paint-wet, so they had to use another?......
