On Four-Day Workweeks
On this first day of a four-day workweek, it seems an appropriate time to call attention to a small typewritten sign spotted recently by Your Boulevardier on the door of Merle Norman Cosmetics on Castro Valley Boulevard. It reads:
ATTENTION .... PLEASE !!!!!
WE TRY TO CONSERVE ENERGY BY:
(1) KEEPING THE LIGHTS TURNED DOWN
(2) BEING CLOSED ONE EXTRA DAY
IF EVERYONE THAT COULD WORK A FOUR DAY WEEK
WOULD SAVE MILLIONS $$$$$$$
ONE LESS CAR ON THE ROAD JUST ONE DAY A WEEK
AGAIN MILLIONS $$$$$ WOULD BE SAVED ....
LESS FOSSIL FUEL BEING BURNED ... MUCH BETTER
FOR OUR ENVIRONMENT ......
ALL WE ASK IS THAT YOU THINK ABOUT YOUR CHOICES
TO MAKE THIS A BETTER WORLD-------INSTEAD OF
COMPLAINING THAT IT'S NOT CONVENIENT!
SEE YOU ON WEDNESDAY, THURSDAY, FRIDAY OR SATURDAY
To which Your Boulevardier can only respond: "Amen."

Well... that's one way to look at it. The cynic in me wonders what the employees think of losing wages and, possibly, customers. Could this be a management ploy to put lipstick on the economic pig? One hopes the altruism on the sign is the genuine article but... hmmm.
ees
Four day work weeks usually mean 10 hour days. Thus preserving the paycheck. My husband worked them until BART took them away and we both loved it. But Shannon just started them and hates it. How about a more flexable schedule so those that want to save money, air, days, and so on,can.
If my commute was shorter, I wouldn't mind 10 hour days. I'm in agreement with Wudas on this one.
Your Boulevardier assumed that the sign was directed at the store's patrons, and not at its employees. Indeed, it's a small shop and one wonders if there are employees other than the proprietress.
Your Boulevardier does not have a horse in this race. He works anywhere from one to seven days per week, and for a varying number of hours per day, depending on the workload. Such is the life of the self-employed. But either way, he doesn't have a commute.
